Concern should not end with credits.
At the start of 2006, 8.4 million people worldwide held refugee status – 8.4 million!
• 1.9 million Afghan refugees represent the largest group of concern, according to the U.N. High Council for Refugees.
• 1.2 million Iraqis are internally displaced persons (those who have fled but remain within their own state). Thursday, Islamic leaders in Somalia decreed that the country is “in a state of war.”
• 50,000 people in the Democratic Republic of Congo have fled violence this December.
I went to see Blood Diamond over the holidays. Easily one of my favorite movies of the year. The stark reality brought out in this film is overwhelming. Our consumer based society truly is to blame for the oppression and imprisonment of many worldwide.
And even the Pope echoed these claims in his Christmas Mass:
As technology like the Internet makes the world a “global village” and scientists decipher the human genome, “some people remain enslaved, exploited and stripped of their dignity,’
Blood Diamond is a must see movie, hopefully one that changes how you view your world and how you treat the global community in your daily life.
